Northern Neck photographyIn 1991 I moved to the Northern Neck from Washington DC. Prior to that I lived in Manhattan and had the dynamic, changing urban landscape of Soho to photograph. It was just going through its gentrification and so there was graffitti and construction everywhere. What a textural and surprising environment to enter every day. Washington seemed much more low key and harder to photograph and I never really found my way. The Northern Neck also seemed to pose far more challenges than New York ever had. It has taken years of looking and looking before I started to see. What I found was that the weather, the waterfront, the older buildings (whether historic or simply crumbling artifacts on the side of the road) all provide a texture and a way to see the world around me in a more dynamic and less anticipated way. It has become more and more alive. One experience I had was taking photos of a view of barns across the creek. This creek, Catpoint Creek, is just a five minute walk from my home and has provided endlessly varied images with ever-changing seasons and weather. But back to the series that I took. Essentially the shifting fog made the landscape in front of me totally alive. This in ways that I had never seen before. It was stunning. It was a series of moment when you simply take what is being given to you and keep recording it. The whole moody, foggy timeframe lasted about 20 minutes. You can see one of that series of photos on the first gallery page...an almost monochromatic, highly evocative image. You just have to look quietly and slowly, and feel it. So there is the farmland and the changing seasons and colors, the waterfront, the big sky and big weather, and many many buildings, often abandoned with the whispers of lives past and much life experience witnessed. I hope that you, too, can feel these places and moments. To see the photos, click on the link at the upper left that includes the word "Gallery." I have now filled out my quota for the free site with the 4 full galleries. I thank you for taking the time to visit this part of the world through my photos. --Kathryn Kathryn 804-450-4442 kam129@aol.com (Please contact me if you are interested in purchasing any of the photos shown in these galleries. Also, I would be pleased to work on any commission work related predominantly to farmlands, waterscapes and architecture. On occasion I do informal settings with families or children, but never formal events. To learn the story of some of these photos there is another website you can visit which is: www.kathrynmurrayphotography.blogspot.com. It was started July 2010, but I have had a rather long hiatus and need to get back to it. I appreciate your interest.) |
